Smoky Gouda Cheeseburgers
Ingredients:
- 1 pound 85/15% ground beef, divided into 4 equal portions
- 4 slices smoked Gouda cheese
- 4 Brioche or sesame seed buns
- Bread & butter pickle chips
- ½ cup French fried onions
- 1/2 cup mushrooms, thinly diced
- Worcestershire sauce, to taste
- 2 Tbs butter
- 1 Tbs olive oil
- Salt & pepper to taste
Let’s get grilling!
- First, place the French fried onions on a paper plate with a paper towel. Place in the microwave at about 15 seconds to get them hot and crispy. Set the French fried onions aside.
- After dividing the ground beef into four equal portions, roll each portion into a ball and smash with your hands or spatula to an even 1/3” thickness. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Fire up the griddle or skillet over a cooktop to medium-high heat. Once it’s hot, put down the olive oil and butter directly onto the griddle. If you use a grill with a grate, skip this step.
- Place the burger patties onto the hot grill or griddle surface and top with a splash of Worcestershire sauce. Grill until cooked through, 4-6 minutes per side; you’re looking for 155-160 degrees for well-done. Flip occasionally.
- When the burger temperature is to your liking, top each burger with a slice of Gouda cheese and remove from the cooktop. Add in the mushrooms and quickly saute until tender in the leftover grilling juices.
- Just before assembly, lightly toast the inside of your burger buns.
- Place a cheeseburger on each bun, adding the sweet pickle slices, a spoonful of mushrooms, and French fried onions. Enjoy!
One reason this camping recipe is so good is that while cheeseburgers are delicious, they can also lose their luster if you have them too often. This is a tasty way to bring a fresh flavor to a classic meal while camping. If you want to make it even easier, buy your hamburger meat in pre-formed patties. All you have to do is season and throw on the grill!
