It’s the start of a new year and folks are getting geared up for travel time and thinking about revisiting favorite destinations or striking out to explore new cities. With the winter Olympics beginning, now is the perfect time to visit some of the cities in the US and Canada where this special event has taken place.

History
The modern Olympics began in 1896 with the first summer games held in Athens, Greece. Since that time, both the summer and winter games have taken place throughout locations around the world. Exceptions to both the summer and winter Olympics not being held was during World War I and Il. The games did not take place in 1916, 1940 and 1944.
United States
In the US, the last winter games were held in Salt Lake City, Utah in 2002. Lake Placid, New York has the distinction of hosting the winter games twice. The first time in 1932 and the second in 1980. Squaw Valley, California had the honor in 1960.
US cities hosting the summer Olympics include St. Louis, Missouri in 1904, Los Angeles, California in 1932 and again in 1984, and Atlanta, Georgia in 1996.
Canada
Canada has hosted the Olympics three times during its long history. The first occasion was when the city of Montreal hosted the summer Olympics of 1976.
The winter Olympics have been held twice in Canada. The first took place in Calgary, Alberta, in 1988 and the more recent event in Vancouver in 2010.
